Exploring Technical Tape Applications in the Construction Industry

Construction projects depend on materials that can hold up to weather, movement, and time. Builders can now turn to specialty adhesive tapes for jobs once handled by mechanical fasteners or wet sealants, such as bonding flooring layers, sealing vapor barriers, and forming thermal breaks in metal building systems.

Learn more about where construction tape applications fit into real building assemblies, from flooring to metal panel systems, and how tape choice affects long-term performance.

Why Specialty Tapes Matter in Modern Construction

Construction crews work against tight schedules, shifting weather, and surfaces that expand and contract with temperature changes. Industrial pressure-sensitive tapes bond on contact, sealing seams and flexing with building materials instead of cracking.

Builders specify industrial tapes for construction work, often replacing slower wet-applied methods. These tapes allow for the following:

  • Consistent seal quality. Each roll delivers the same coverage for repeatable performance.
  • Simpler installation. Tape bonds quickly so crews can move on without waiting for adhesive to cure.
  • Flexibility under stress. Tape backing flexes with building movement instead of cracking.
  • Reduced mess and waste. No mixing, drips, or cleanup of excess material.

Double-coated tape is a good fit for construction, gaskets, weatherstripping, signage, packaging, and any joint where you need the bond line itself to have stability.

Flooring Applications for Adhesive Tapes

Flooring assemblies can include subfloor, underlayment, vapor control, and finish surface layers, and each interface is a potential failure point if it isn’t sealed or bonded correctly.

Surface Bonding

Installers can use double-coated tape to secure underlayment to subfloors and hold flooring materials in place during installation, skipping the mess and dry time of liquid adhesives. For OEMs producing flooring panels, a consistent adhesive tape backing supports reliable assembly and can reduce callbacks for loose seams.

Moisture/Vapor Barriers

Concrete slabs can release moisture vapor after curing. Without a vapor barrier, this moisture can move into flooring materials and cause warping, mold, or other problems. Construction applications can use pressure-sensitive tape that creates a barrier to keep vapors and moisture from passing through.

Acoustic Underlayment Support

Acoustic underlayment, common in multi-story buildings, relies on tape to stay bonded and seal seams between panels, keeping the acoustic layer performing optimally once the final flooring is installed.

Thermal Break and Insulation Applications in Metal Buildings

Metal buildings conduct heat and cold through structural frames. Without interruption, that conductivity can result in condensation, energy loss, or structural stress at connection points. Engineered tapes and double-coated foam adhesives interrupt this path at the seams and panel connections where metal components meet.

Vapor Sealing and Lap Joint Sealing

Gaps where insulation meets framing let moisture-laden air reach cold surfaces. Double-coated tape closes these gaps and creates a seal that helps protect insulation performance. At lap joints, where corrugated metal panels overlap, tape bonds panels together and blocks water infiltration.

Thermal Breaks

A low-conductivity adhesive barrier can be placed between conductive structural elements. A foam carrier resists heat transfer, which can keep cold spots from forming where metal touches metal. These tapes can be engineered to withstand the load of the panel system.

High-Movement Applications

Temperature, wind load, and settling can cause movement in panels, walls, and structural elements. Specifying a tape rated for high-movement applications up front avoids field failures that show up after a building has gone through a few seasons of temperature swings.

Custom-engineered tapes can be used to accommodate the natural expansion, contraction, and structural vibration of dissimilar materials such as metal, glass, and concrete.

Explore Construction Tape Solutions from Advantage Adhesives

Every one of these construction adhesive tape applications, from flooring tape to thermal break tape, depends on a tape built for the job. Advantage Adhesives coats, slits, and spools industrial tapes for construction, ensuring that the adhesive, backing, and thickness fits the application.

Whether you’re sourcing flooring tape for a new line or seeking industrial tapes for a construction project with demanding requirements, contact Advantage Adhesives to discuss your adhesive tape requirements.

Double Coated vs. Transfer Tape

When you’re specifying a bonding solution for an OEM build, the choice between double-coated tape and transfer tape can quietly make or break your assembly. Both pressure-sensitive options bond two surfaces without mechanical fasteners, yet they behave differently under thermal stress, mechanical shear, and high production speeds. Specifying the incorrect format inevitably leads to failed bonds and scrapped parts.

Here’s how Advantage Adhesives breaks down double-coated vs. transfer tape for our customers and how to decide which belongs in your next build.

Double Coated Tape

Double-coated tape has adhesive on both sides of a carrier, like film, tissue, foam, or fabric. That carrier is what gives the tape its body. It’s the workhorse format when you need structure, gap-filling, or differential adhesion (one side tackier than the other).

Features

Double-coated tapes are engineered with distinct physical properties to support mechanical stabilization:

  • Carrier substrate. Incorporates a carrier (such as PET, BOPP, tissue, paper, or foam) sandwiched between two distinct adhesive layers.
  • Adhesive versatility. Features either matched or unmatched adhesive chemistries on each side to accommodate dissimilar materials.
  • Thickness range. Varies in thickness from 1 mil up to 30+ mils when utilizing high-density foam carriers.
  • Surface conformability. Absorbs minor surface irregularities to maintain continuous surface-to-substrate contact.

Benefits

Selecting a double-coated configuration provides significant performance and production advantages:

  • Environmental resistance. Withstands high mechanical shear, structural vibration, and intense temperature swings.
  • Mating and sealing. Utilizes compressible foam cores to cushion uneven surfaces and establish a reliable environmental moisture seal.
  • Die-cut stability. Increases dimensional stability, making the material easier to handle, slit, and die-cut.
  • Differential adhesion. Allows engineers to pair a high-surface-energy (HSE) adhesive on one side with a low-surface-energy (LSE) adhesive on the other.

Double-coated tape is a good fit for construction, gaskets, weatherstripping, signage, packaging, and any joint where you need the bond line itself to have stability.

Transfer Tape

Transfer tape is adhesive without a carrier. It’s a thin film of pressure-sensitive adhesive on a release liner. When you apply it, the adhesive transfers off the liner onto your substrate. Nothing else stays behind.

Features

Transfer tapes are a clean, carrier-free option optimized for tight tolerances:

  • Pure adhesive profile. Composed of 100% unsupported adhesive film, typically holding a thin profile of 1 to 5 mils.
  • Simplified construction. Adhesive coated directly onto a release liner.
  • Production compatibility. Integrates seamlessly with high-speed web laminating, splicing, and rotary die-cutting production lines.

Benefits

For high-volume or low-profile designs, transfer tapes deliver direct processing advantages:

  • Low-profile aesthetics. Maximizes visual appeal by creating an invisible bond line within flush joints.
  • Material cost efficiency. Lowers overall cost per square foot by eliminating carrier substrate layers.
  • Rapid wet-out. Achieves excellent adhesion on high-energy, smooth surfaces like metals, glass, and rigid plastics.
  • Automation readiness. Maximizes uptime when paired with rapid automated tape dispensers and roll-to-roll converting machinery.

Our transfer tape line, including AT301 and AT501, is built for graphic overlays, point-of-purchase displays, paper splicing, and any spec where the adhesive should disappear into the joint.

Key Differences and Applications

Side by side, the differences become easier to evaluate:

The Hidden Costs of Imported Adhesive Tapes: What OEMs Must Know

Adhesive tapes play a crucial role in modern manufacturing and packaging. Whether they are used for bonding or sealing, adhesive tapes keep operations running smoothly in electronics, automotive, aerospace, and general industrial production.

At first glance, imported adhesive tapes may appear to be a budget-friendly option for OEMs seeking to reduce costs. But beneath the low price tag lies a tangle of hidden expenses and risks that can disrupt your supply chain and hurt your bottom line. Here, we’ll take a closer look at the additional costs behind imported adhesive tapes and explain how purchasing domestic adhesive tapes can save OEMs time and money in the long run.

Tariffs and Hidden Expenses

Many manufacturers are drawn to imported adhesive tapes because of their surface-level cost savings. Often, the initial price per roll is displayed as lower than what you’d find from a domestic supplier.

However, this number doesn’t reflect the actual total cost of ownership. Here’s how additional costs can add up:

  • Import tariffs. Depending on the country of origin, tariffs can increase your cost by 25% or more.
  • Shipping fees. Ocean freight is neither cheap nor fast. Rising fuel prices, surcharges, and container shortages all contribute to higher costs.
  • Delays at customs. Border delays can lead to stalled production lines and missed deadlines, presenting a costly gamble for any original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
  • Quality inconsistency. Many imported tapes fail to meet the same performance standards or quality control benchmarks. When those tapes don’t perform as they should, product failures and replacements cut into your margins.
  • Compliance risks. Non-compliant tapes can result in fines, returns, or recalls.

Advantage Adhesives: 20 Years of Uncompromised Excellence

It was 20 years ago this week, that Greg Lane started Advantage Adhesives, Inc. He set out to build a company built around products of uncompromising quality and excellent service; to build an organization that was focused on dealing with customers, suppliers and employees with honesty and integrity; to find solutions rather than pushing off the shelf products on our customers problems; by being innovative and thinking outside of the box.

It is fun to think about the early days, to look back on pictures when we were all a little bit younger and our equipment was shiny and new. Its inspiring to walk out into our manufacturing facility and think back on the days where we occupied a small corner in the back of someone else’s warehouse. Greg often tells a story from the early days about issuing a PO for cores for our very first customer. It was a big deal for Greg to sign that first PO. It wasn’t a lot, but at the time, it was. He held onto it for 3 days, pulling it out and looking at it and then putting it back into his desk, until he got up the courage to take that leap. There are many small milestones that were exciting, like getting a brand-new coating line, or slitter. When we started we didn’t even have the capability to coat. One of the biggest moments for us was coating our first master roll of tape. We only ran it at 50 feet per minute, but it was special. It was the start of in house coating capabilities that would be tweaked and improved to get us to where we are today. Today we run 3 coating lines, 6 slitters, and 2 spooling lines.

It is not about machines or buildings though, but rather about the people who have made us who we are today. It is the relationships we have built with our many great suppliers who decided to sell the small new guy a few boxes of adhesive, or the liner supplier who agreed to make a few hundred feet of the liner when the big guys wouldn’t even take the phone call. It is about the customers who have leaned on us for our expertise, and our commitment to service. It is our customers who have counted on us to deliver a quality product, that is on time and priced right. Most importantly though, it is about our employees who have put in the hard work and long hours to work through problems and working late to make sure that equipment got fixed or that an urgent order got out to our customer in need. Greg likes to talk about having good employees in this way, “You can put me in a Ferrari, and Mario Andretti in a Yugo, and Mario Andretti will beat me every time.” Mario doesn’t win because Greg is a bad driver. Mario wins because he is an excellent driver. Our employees are the best around and it is due to their care and constant attention to detail that we can provide the best tape on the market today.

Our 1st production roll of PSA tape made in house.

We have been busy in the past year working on growing our customer base and the products we can provide them. To do this we added a new inside sales position. We also took it upon ourselves to become ISO9001:2015 registered, which was not an easy process. We didn’t undertake this because we were told to do it by a customer, we did it because we wanted to be better.

Over the course of these last 20 years, we have experienced tremendous growth. Our expectations for Advantage Adhesives for the next 20 years is to continue to make Advantage a better place to work for our employees, increase our capabilities, develop new ways to be able to enhance our customers ability to interact with us, and continue to make it easy for our customers to work with us. We owe our highest thanks to our customers, suppliers and employees as we continue our growth during the next 20 years.

If you are an existing customer call us to talk about your new requirements. If you are not yet one of our customers, please give us a call and we will show you what we can do for you.

Welcome to the next 20 years!
